Looking for a unique dessert for your Blame the Butler Murder Mystery Party? Look no further than these fabulous red velvet cake Crime Scene Cupcakes.
Materials Needed:
Red Velvet Cupcakes: You can make these from scratch, use a mix, or buy them fresh from a bakery.
White Frosting: For a striking contrast against the red.
Wilton Frosting Weapons: (Available at Michaels or Joann Fabrics).
Wilton Sugar Sheet: One bright yellow sheet (I found mine on Amazon).
Black Icing in a Tube: (Easily sourced from Michaels, grocery stores, or Joann Fabrics).
Black Muffin Cup Baking Papers: (Available at Michaels and Joann Fabrics).
Clean Kitchen Scissors: For cutting the sugar sheet.
Step One: Bake Your Cupcakes
Begin by deciding whether to whip up your cupcakes from scratch, use a pre-made mix, or purchase them ready-made. We chose the vibrant red velvet variety, as its rich color mimics blood perfectly.
If you're going the homemade route, here's a tip: don’t skimp on the red food coloring—it’s key to achieving that dramatic hue. Once your cupcakes are baked, allow them to cool completely; frosting them while warm will result in a melty mess!
For a unique twist, I overfilled my cupcake tins slightly, letting the batter spill over and create interesting, irregular shapes.
Step Two: Frost the Cupcakes
Generously frost your cooled cupcakes with the white frosting. Feel free to leave swirls of red visible; this not only adds visual interest but also provides a perfect spot for the frosting weapons later.
Step Three: Create Your Crime Scene Tape
To fashion your crime scene tape, take the Wilton sugar sheet and cut it into thin strips—aim for about 1/2 inch in width, but don’t worry about precision. Leave the strips a bit long; you can trim them down later.
Step Four: Write the Message
Now it’s time to write "Crime Scene" on your tape. Consider practicing your lettering on a piece of paper first. I found that using block capital letters made for cleaner, neater writing. It’s much easier to do this before you place the ribbon on the sugar sheet.
Step Five: Assemble Your Cupcakes
Place your completed crime scene ribbon on top of the frosted cupcake. Then, take your chosen frosting weapon and gently insert it into the cupcake—just deep enough for it to stay put without completely disappearing from view.
And there you have it—your Crime Scene Cupcakes are ready to steal the show at any Halloween gathering!
A Few Notes:
While the Wilton frosting weapons are edible, they tend to be quite hard and not particularly tasty, reminiscent of those stale letters from childhood birthday cakes. The sugar sheets are also edible, but they have little to no flavor. But the cupcakes are delicious and make a photograph worthy dessert that every one will be talking about.
Enjoy your spooky creations!
